Perspective

or...it's all relative.
 I say this a lot...it's all relative.

Because it is.
You might think you're broke, stressed or ugly but it's all directly related to your own feelings about the matter because there is always someone more broke, more stressed or uglier than you.
I was reminded of this very interesting quote by a 1956 news columnist a few weeks ago...
“It is estimated that a century ago (from 1956) the average man had 72 wants, of which 16 were regarded as necessities."
"Today (in 1956), the average man is estimated to have 474 wants, 94 of which are regarded as necessities."
"A century ago (from 1956), 200 articles were urged upon the average man by salesmanship—but today (in 1956) there are 32,000 articles which require sales resistance."
Now I realize that my math is really bad, but I've figured that this was 54 years ago.

Fifty-four years!!!!
I can't even imagine how the number of 474 "wants" has climbed in the past 54 years.

I'm no statistician but here's my guess...
If the number of "wants" jumped from 72 to 474 in a the century before 1956 that means that supposed "wants" increased by 402 in 100 years (a century is 100 years, right?).
 It's been 54 years since 1956. (right?)

So if there were no other variables that changed during that time, like increased marketing strategies and new technology available to the general public (which isn't the case) then that would mean that our "wants" have increased by approximately 201 which brings the grand total of "wants" to 675.
Our "needs"--things we must have to survive and function as human beings--went from 16 in 1856, to 94 in 1956 and probably well over 133 today.

This is things you can't live without....NEEDS.

So what changed between 1856 and 2010?

Perspective.

It's all relative.
