It seems that a wedding post is as good a place as any to put Chapter Four...
The girl received a letter.
It was passed from one friend to another until it reached her and was quickly slapped into her palm.
It was on white, lined paper but the edges were slightly brown, either from the dirty hands of the numerous friends that passed it along or from the boy's hands as he slowly creased one fold after another.
It was folded in half the length of the paper and then in half again. It was then folded in thirds the opposite direction and a little corner was tucked into the folds so when it was opened it was like a little present of words.
It had her name on the front.
She didn't even care that it was spelled wrong.
Because it was from him.
It said he thought she was cute.
It said he wanted to be her boyfriend.
She was supposed to write him back to let him know.
She was standing under a Juniper tree while she read the letter and she nervously picked some of the little blue berries off a branch and started rolling them around in her fingers.
The paper smelled like him.
Her heart was beating a little faster and despite herself, she was smiling.
But then she forced a frown.
Because it was obviously a joke.
He didn't really like her. He was just teasing her.
Girls had teased her this same way in school before...they tell you that a boy wants to go out with you and ask you if you will and when you say "yes" they start laughing and tell you he didn't really want to go out with you but now they know that you like him.
She had learned to always say "no" if someone asked.
She was instructed to destroy the letter as soon as she read it.
So she did.
Though she would regret it later.
