How I Met Your Father

I've decided to tell you a story.

It's the beginning of a love story.
I've been wanting to write about how Matt and I met but I knew things would get garbled up with "and then", "I said", "he said" and "if I remember correctly", so I've decided to tell it to you now in the third person.
I've heard that the memories we relate are rarely correct, particularly as you get farther and farther from the time the original event took place, but this is the first memory I have of meeting Matt and as far as I know it is 100% factual.

Several people have verified the time frame and probability that these things actually occurred, and in my mind they are as real as the keyboard I'm currently typing on.

The story begins:
The girl was likely eight or nine years old.

She was pale and lanky, built like a scrawny boy.

She had stringy blond hair and big blue eyes.

She was quiet, shy even, but her mind was in a constant state of wonder (if not confusion).
She was at a state park with her family.

There was a baseball game taking place between friends but the girl was afraid to play.  She didn't know the rules.

She didn't want to do something stupid in front of the crowd of people she didn't know, so she started off  across the green field towards the playground in the distance.

She liked the sounds of the game taking place behind her...the clapping, yelling, and laughing.
There was a girl hanging from the monkey bars.

This girl had a dark tan complexion, dark hair and dark eyes.
She had a boisterous, almost aggressive personality.

She unabashedly introduced herself as Andrea and promptly started quizzing the girl about who she was, where she was from and the names of boys she liked.
The girl didn't know how to answer this quiz.

She didn't "like" boys.

She "knew" boys.

There was a boy that she climbed trees with, but she didn't "like" him.  She just climbed trees with him and sometimes punched him.
Andrea seemed disappointed in the girl for not having a list of boys to discuss so they sat on the swings and kicked their feet in the gravel instead.
They were looking down at their feet when the happy noise from the crowd changed to a concerned yell in their direction.

They looked up and saw the baseball flying through the air in their direction.

It stopped just short of the swings and landed with a thud in the grass.
The girl ran to the ball and picked it up.

The crowd yelled for her to throw it to them but the girl was afraid she wouldn't do it right so she continued to hold it in her hand.
As she was contemplating what to do a boy emerged from the crowd.

He began running towards the girl.
He was her age...eight or nine.

He had blond hair and a tan body.

He seemed confident (if not a tad bit cocky).
Just as it seemed that he would never stop running towards her, there he was directly in front of her.

He held out his hand and said "hi" between deep intakes of air.
The girl dropped the ball into his open hand.

He wiped the sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand, turned and ran back towards the crowd.
The girl had a weird feeling in her mind, maybe in her stomach.

Did she "like" this boy?

She turned back to her new found friend who was involved in twisting herself up in the swing and preparing to let herself be swung about in a circle.

The girl said, "Who was THAT?  He seemed like a jerk."
Andrea laughed at the girl.

She said, "That's my brother...Matt.  You think he's cute, don't you?"

The girl said, "No".

And then she started twisting herself up in the swing too.

And she was blushing.
